On 2 July 2021, Jochen Kupfer will give his inaugural concert at the University of Music in Würzburg, where he has held a professorship in singing since 2019.
Due to the pandemic, the date had to be postponed several times before.
Jochen Kupfer invites his audience to a musical summer night with songs by Hans Sommer, Franz Schubert and Richard Strauss.
Jochen Kupfer's song recital starts with Hans Sommer's song Sommernacht (Summer Night) and focuses on works by Hans Sommer (1837-1922). Sommer, a close friend of Richard Strauss, composed more than 200 Lieder. His compositional style is in the Late Romantic tradition, but he developed his own colourful tonal language with a complex relationship between voice and piano. Thus he has an outstanding position in the song repertoire of the late High and Late Romantic period. Jochen Kupfer makes Sommer's works, forgotten for a long time, accessible to a wide audience again in his song recitals and the three-part CD production "Hans Sommer Lied Edition".
In addition, famous Lieder by Franz Schubert and Richard Strauss will be presented, rounding off the summer night in a dreamy-roamntic mood.

Jochen Kupfer will sing the part of Pizarro in the new production of Ludwig van Beethoven's Fidelio at the festival styriarte in Graz on July 13 & 14, 2018.
This will be his scenical debut as Pizarro after having sung the role in a several concert performances at the Herrenchiemsee festival in 2014.
Fidelio is the story about Florestan, Fidelio/Leonore and Don Pizarro, governor of the state prison, who wants to murder Florestan, because he knows about Pizarro's corruption.
But this production - staging by Thomas Höft - tells also the very modern story about personal courage, moral integrity and a love that overcomes any obstacle and humanity.
Video clips with very personal statements illustrate the parallels between Beethoven's historical story and the experiences of people of today who have had to flee persecution and atrocities in their home countries and came to Austria.
Stories about "real" Leonores and Florestans of today - people who need just the kind of encouragement that Beethoven once wanted to offer with his "freedom opera".
Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts the styriarte Festival Orchestra.
Premiere: July 13, 2018, Graz, Helmut-List-Halle
Next performance: July 14, 2018, Graz, Helmut-List-Halle

Premiered 1965, the opera is regarded as the most important work of music theater of the post-war period.
Jochen Kupfer about his new role:
"When singing Zimmermann's music you always have to go to the limits and to sing in extreme vocal positions. Natural speech rhythm and melody are sudordinated to his strict and somehow mathematical principle of composition. Despite of the very short scenes, I try to give character and profile as much as possible to the person of Stolzius. I hope the audience will understand him and his personal fate."
Conductor of the new production at Staatstheater Nürnberg is GMD Marcus Bosch, staging by Peter Konwitschny.

Kathrin Adel, Marie Photo: Staatstheater Nürnberg/L. Olah |
Premiered in Berlin in 1925, Berg's Wozzeck is written in "free tonality". Nevertheless there are familiar elements in it such as folk songs, lullabies, military music or Viennese waltzes. Singing however is quite new - there is singing, there is speaking and also a mixture of both of it.
A fascinating modern combination which, however, never is unsettling or overstraining for the listener.
Jochen Kupfer will deliver a musical and scenic psychology of Wozzeck who sees only one way out in the end...
The production will be conducted by Gábor Kalí and directed by Georg Schmiedleitner.
A preliminary report concerning the new production can be seen on BR Klassik.
